Studio Riebenbauer introduces a “The Parasite” photo book, featuring enchanting works of Sophie Tillier. It is an organic symbiosis of classic book and eco design, where the first turns into a humble yet beautiful background for the second and spark to philosophical reflections.
She started The Parasite in 2008 and the project isn’t over yet. It consists in drilling holes in various natural history volumes to fill them with soil and seeds — the rest is up to the forces of nature. Inhabited by plants (parasites), worms, snails and microbes, the books turn into a magnetic symbol of becoming and decay. Interpret it literally: the books interact with living organisms which soak up the content and change the materiality and the accustomed function.
The process of decay and resurrection serves a metaphor for the knowledge humanity acquired over the past centuries and transmitted through books. The generation will pass, but there will always be a new life to adopt the knowledge and bring it anew.
The metamorphoses come captured in the album, and we are in the presence of truly fascinating scenes featuring classical book design, clean typography and a color palette that grabs your creative heart in a second. A lover of complex social approach in design, I may only treat The Parasite as perfect work where deep sense meets flawless visual execution. Just see for yourself!
