So here’s the backstory: I’ve always been into rocks, minerals, and crystals; all my friends and colleagues know about that (not hard to be, when there’s someone like me bragging about new pyrite or tiger’s eye). Before selecting items for this Steven Universe fan art, I’ve never seen an episode, but know Crystal Gems from Beach City are my spiritual sisters!
A couple of words about the revolutionary nature of this animated TV series before jumping into the Steven Universe fan art itself. The cartoon unveils the non-binary characters in the judgemental-free world where crystals and humans coexist in harmony, standing against the evil creatures, trying to destroy the Earth. Keeping in mind, that it’s the kids show where LGBT sprinkles are not usually welcomed, this cartoon demonstrates the relationships between female gems through their fusion into a more powerful crystal.
And Steven himself gets shown as a fun guy who likes to dress as a girl, doesn’t feel shame about crying in public and having “girly” hobbies. You won’t read all that through the Steven Universe art (enumerated facts, actually, don’t affect the awesomeness of every illustration included) but I’d like to express the appreciation of delivering the modern values in such an easy-going and not intrusive way.
I’m still on season 4, but I already feel like head over hills in love with the show that much! Now I want you to see Steven and the Crystal Gems through the eyes of gifted artists! As usual, we’ve got anime, pixel art, realism and flat illustrations in here, so you can choose this month’s Steven Universe background theme. Oh, and check out the pink lion, isn’t he super-duper adorable?
