Handwriting fonts encompass a vast field of their forms and subtypes, leaving only one common feature untouched — the precise imitation of an actual inscription made by hand. There’s a huge space for your creativity to run around!

Turn of a hand, the slope of a line, trembling edges spinning together in a symphony of handwriting. It’s pleasing to see all the lines so unique and real, you know what I mean? Even in the digitalized version, handwriting fonts tend to be crafted with the highest degree of natural easiness. This is the right time to bring up the handwriting fonts when modern designs gravitate to the human approach, encouraging a playful feel these fonts possess.

Handwriting fonts represent the ones, created with the use of an instrument (it can be pen, pencil, feather, chalk, brush, etc), producing this or that inscription effect. But not only the chosen instrument defines the type of handwriting font, but it’s also the letters themselves. Everything counts: size, spacing, thickness, repetition of elements. Based on that, handwriting fonts can be divided into the following types:

  • Cursive Handwriting
  • Calligraphy Fonts
  • Chalkboard Fonts
  • Signature Fonts
  • Brush Fonts
  • Monoline Fonts

Nevertheless, some of the handwriting fonts combine elements from other types, making it hard to match them with only one category. And that’s the beautiful thing about the handwriting fonts!

Cursive Handwriting

You know this one by its more common name — script font. Cursive fonts represent the characters, connected together with an uninterrupted flowing line, which was born because of the need to write faster without lifting the instrument from the surface. Letters can be sophisticated and curly, wavy or even looking more like a shaking line rather than some distinctive inscription — it’ll still be cursive (or script, if you like).

Cursive is a broad and general notion for some other types of handwriting fonts, defining the technique rather than some peculiarities. There are more curious handwriting fonts await you in this collection!

Calligraphy Fonts

Perhaps, barely different from cursive script, calligraphy fonts are made into the art of aesthetic handwriting techniques. These typographic pieces are charming and elegant with all their swashes, alternates, and ligatures. Any calligraphy font will find its perfect place on the invitation, cosmetics packaging, header decoration, spectacular logotype, sometimes a t-shirt design, why not? Calligraphy font may be equated with wedding font because of their festive nature.

These typefaces are subtle, professional, and eye-catching — but first, they are eager to convey your project’s message via their strokes and swashes.

Chalkboard Fonts

The powdery texture of a chalkboard font is strongly associated with educational process. While someone enters painful memories from school about standing next to the blackboard, others craft delightful and authentic chalkboard fonts! They perfectly imitate different shapes of a chalk: round and thin, leaving the light trace or a straight clear line. You can literally see where the authors have pressed harder, gave the chalk a turn or erased some parts a little bit to create a foggy effect. Not only school-related designs can be done with chalkboard fonts, it’s also a great solution for coffee shops, beauty salons, posters, and interior banners!

Originally from your classroom, chalk has joined lettering — it brought roughness to the classics and some romance to modest artworks.

Signature Fonts

Digitally imitating the people’s handwriting — that’s the purpose of a signature font, highlighting the personality of the author, the writing style and, of course, the chosen instrument. What is peculiar about signature fonts is the more or less coherent and monotonous flow of a line, no standing out contrasts in the strokes. However, it all depends on the material: paint may lay on paper in a bit unpredictable way, for example (it happens quite often with watercolors). Sometimes they need to be fixed, sometimes they already look nice — just pick the best option for your invitation, logotype, merch design, or printouts!

Brush Fonts

Round, flat, filbert, fan, angle, mop — types of brushes you can use to carry out a perfect brush font. The choice of paint also affects the result, even the dryness of the brush! It’s insane how many options can be combined in order to create the handwriting brush font.

The most realistic feel, however, can be achieved in SVG fonts because of the glyphs. Brush fonts please the eye in urban-themed projects (sportswear ads or billboard commercials), motivational social media posts, and t-shirt designs.

Monoline Fonts

This type covers sans serif and script fonts in general but the distinctive feature lays in the same stem thickness of vertical and horizontal lining. Well, apart from that fact, a monoline font looks as if it was written in one breath, which adds a bit of meticulous attitude to it (in its best meaning, of course!). I’d say a monoline font is a cool tattoo option but it’s appropriate in all the other standard font implementations, mentioned in the other types of handwriting fonts.
